Memorable Monday: Father of the Bride (1950)

The Father of the Bride is a humorous and very funny comedy movie released on June 16, 1950.  It stars Spencer Tracy (who is also the narrator of the movie), Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Bennett, Don Taylor, Billie Burke and Leo G. Carroll.  It was directed by Vincente Minnelli (the father of Academy Award for Best Actress Winner Lisa Minnelli).  The movie was produced by Pandro S. Berman and has a running time of 92 minutes.

The Father of the Bride was based on the novel by Edward Streeter with Gluyas Williams as its illustrator.  It was published in 1949 by Simon and Schuster.

It is not an easy task for a father to say yes to his daughter when asked if its OK for her to get married.  Such are the circumstances with the Banks' family in the movie, The Father of the Bride.  Stanley Bank (Spencer Tracy) is faced with the dilemma that his daughter Kay (Elizabeth Taylor) is about to walk down the isle to be with his soon-to-be-husband Buckley Dunstan (Don Taylor).

After months of preparation, commotion, dilemma, uncertainty, second-thoughts and some hesitation, the father of the bride will soon walk with his daughter side-by-side straight to the altar. Although teary-eyed at first, he realizes that his fears are baseless and that all will be well for his daughter.

The movie earned for it three nominations at the 23rd Academy Awards - Best Actor in a Leading Role - Spencer Tracy, Best Picture and Best Writing/Screenplay - Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett .

The movie was a commercial success that's why a sequel was immediately made and was released in 1951 with the title Father's Little Dividend.  All the previous cast returned.  The director was still Vincente Minnelli and its producer Pandro S. Berman.  Kay is now pregnant and will soon give birth to a baby boy.  The dilemma now for Stanley is that, according to him, he is still too young to be a grandfather.

Dateline Movies Presents: Top Movies About Fatherhood

1.  The Father of the Bride

source
The Father of the Bride is a 1991 comedy movie that stars Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Martin Short, B.D. Wong, Kieran Culkin, Kimberly Williams, and George Newbern.   It is directed by Charles Shyer and has a running time of 105 minutes.  It is based on the 1950 film bearing the same title which was screenplayed by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett.  Steve Martin plays the role of a father who refuses to let go of his "little"girl even if she is in the right marrying age.   A very funny and humorous movie that has spawned a sequel in 1995 titled Father of the Bride II.

2.  The Pursuit of Happyness

source
Released in December 15, 2006, the biological drama (a biological drama or biopic is a film that tells the actual life events of a person) The Pursuit of Happyness is the story of Christopher Paul "Chris" Gardner, owner of Gardner Rich & Co, a stockbrokerage firm based in Chicago, Illinois. Before his life of success,  he strugggled of homelessness with his son living in transit stations or day-care centers. For his portrayal of the role, Will Smith was nominated for an Academy Award as well as a nomination in the Golden Globe Awards.  This touching and emotional film also stars Will Smith's son Jaden.

3.  The Road

source
Based on the 2006 Pulitzer Prize winner of American author, novelist, playwright, and screenwriter Cormac McCarthy, The Road stars Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Academy Award winner Robert Duvall, Charlize Theron and Guy Pearce.  It has a running time of 111 minutes and was released on November 25, 2009 and was directed by John Hillcoat.  It is a post-apocalyptic drama about a father and his young son living in an almost barren wasteland after an inexplicable incident happened on earth destroying most of its plant and animal life.  Of all the movies mentioned in this list, I find this movie, The Road, the most heart-warming of them all.

4.  Finding Nemo

source
Coming from Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures in May 30, 2003, Finding Nemo is a computer-animated film with a touch of drama, adventure and comedy all combined in one movie.  With the voice-talents of Albert Brooks as Marlin, Ellen DeGeneres as Dory, Alexander Gould as Nemo, Willem Dafoe as Gil, and a host of other well-known actors and actresses, Andrew Stanton's story comes alive under his screenplay and direction.  Searching the vast ocean, fighting with sharks, swimming with turtles, avoiding stinging jelly-fishes, are just some of the perils a father is willing to undertake just to find his lost son.

source

Field of Dreams is a movie adopted from the 1982 novel by W. P. Kinsella, Shoeless Joe, that tells the story of Ray Kinsella, a farmer from Iowa who has a troubled relationship with his baseball devoted father.  He is now living with his wife Annie and his daughter Karin. He sees visions and hears voices instructing him to make a baseball field in his corn farm. Although the story is somewhat creepy and absurb,  with the right chemistry of Phil Alden Robinson's direction and screenplay, and fine acting from its cast, the movie turns out one of the best mix of baseball, fairy-tale short of and family story ever seen on screen. It stars Kevin Costner on the lead role, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta
and Burt Lancaster.  The movie also got three nominations in the Academy Awards for Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay and also the coveted Best Picture Award.

Who Should Be In Spider-Man: The New Avenger?

Source
Spider-Man has been rebooted again, but look on the bright side, he will be an Avenger! Welcome once more to Dateline Movies, and today, we'll talk about who should be in the upcoming and anticipated addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: The New Avenger / The Spectacular Spider-Man, depending on what Marvel thinks is suiting for their film. With the recent failure of the Amazing Spider-Man 2 (even I am disappointed myself) there is no doubt that Sony would make another reboot nobody asked for. Fortunately, Marvel and Sony struck a deal that the two will collaborate in making Spider-Man an Avenger, who may be fighting the Sinister Six. One question remains though, who should be in the film? Well, that's exactly what we'll be talking about here. With Spider-Man now an established hero prior to the events in the movie and the Sinister Six probably uniting to kill him, there is no doubt that many people may fit perfectly for any role, but these are whom I suggest.
The Main Cast

Source 1, Source 2
1. Asa Butterfield as Peter Parker / Spider-Man

You knew this was coming. Fans everywhere often say that he is the actual Peter Parker because come on, just look at him. He definitely fits the bill for a young Spider-Man. If you watched his other films such as Hugo and Ender's Game, you might just see how Asa Butterfield can easily fill-in Spider-Man's shoes!

Source 1, Source 2
2. Tom Felton as Harry Osborn / The Green Goblin

Okay, maybe almost all of you are praying that Matthew McConaughey will play the Green Goblin (no offense but I think I see him more as the Norman Osborn who pretended to retire from being a bad guy type), but I have a feeling Marvel might hold off on Norman for a while, and instead put the spotlight on Harry, Peter's best-friend turned enemy, who I think should be played by Tom Felton. Now why is that? There's...

1.) It's a safe bet that the Sinister Six that was set-up in the Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be used in this film. This is also proven with Drew Goddard's rumored involvement here due to his connection to the planned Sinister Six film.

2.) Tom Felton played Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series, so you can say he already has an experience in being in the dark side, and...

3.) For comicbook readers, you know Norman just needs a distraction, especially if you heard of his part in the Dark Reign story arc.

Source 1, Source 2
3. Alfred Molina as Otto Octavius / Doctor Octopus

Of course, no fan-cast is complete without the astounding Alfred Molina's portrayal of the menacing, Doctor Octopus. As the founder of the Sinister Six in the comics, Doc Ock, as he is often called, remains to be a thorn on the web-head's side for years, even going as far as killing him (temporarily of course). You might have heard that he is willing to reprise his role if he is offered? Come on Marvel, ready that paycheck.

Source 1, Source 2
4. Ron Perlman as Aleksei Sytsevich / Rhino

Maybe a handful of you have mixed responses towards Paul Giamatti as Rhino last year, but for me it was okay, and it was sadly wasted (so did Dane DeHaan's talents as Harry Osborn) on an overstuffed series of craziness. But let's not rely on the past, and let's look into the future. I think Ron Perlman makes a pretty good Rhino. Sure, the Rhino may be Russian in the comics, but if you watched Enemy At The Gates, you might have heard his Russian accent in a convincing manner. Plus, he played Hellboy. Speaking of Hellboy, Ron Perlman needs your help in making Hellboy 3!

Source 1, Source 2
5. Johnny Depp as Quentin Beck / Mysterio

I had a hard time deciding this one. At several points, I considered Neil Patrick Harris to be the perfect Mysterio, but he looks more a lot like the Riddler from DC Comics. So I chose Johnny Depp as my suggestion to play Mysterio, who is a stunt-man and illusionist turned villain, because if you have watched a few of his better movies like Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and maybe Transcendence (a little), you know he could portray a slightly wacky, at the same time an intimidating character. Also, he desperately needs a hit, so what better way to receive that than to join Marvel?

Source 1, Source 2
6. John Malkovich as Adrian Toomes / Vulture

This one is no contest. For the real Spider-Fans, you might have done your research and found out that John Malkovich was originally set to play the Vulture in Sam Raimi's scrapped Spider-Man 4, alongside Anne Hathaway as the Vulturess, an original character for the movie. If you look closely, he does look a lot like Adrian Toomes, Spidey's oldest foe so far. If you haven't heard of him, a few of his best performances include Being John Malkovich, In The Line of Fire, Burn After Reading and just recently RED.

Source 1, Source 2
7. Sharlto Copley as Sergei Kravinoff / Kraven the Hunter

This one maybe a little hard to picture for a few, but if you have watched District 9 (or any of the films Neil Blomkamp directed), you could notice that Sharlto Copley has a distinctive and sometimes disturbingly convincing acting style. In Elysium, he almost looks a lot like Kraven the Hunter, who is an insane big game hunter aiming to grab Spidey's head. The accent may confuse some readers, since he is Russian in the comics, and at one time Australian, but from what I've learned from a lot of articles, race never mattered as long as the actor stays true to the source material!

Source 1, Source 2
8. Saoirse Ronan as Mary Jane Watson

This one became more of a wild guess for me because for one thing, there aren't much actresses who may capture the essence of Mary Jane Watson, Peter's love interest. Well I enjoyed her performance in a few of her films like The Lovely Bones and Hanna, even though the latter had a vague ending, so I think that's enough for me to be convinced that she might actually be perfect as Mary Jane. Besides, this film needs someone who at least has the same age as Asa Butterfield, if he is set to play the role of Spidey.

Source 1, Source 2
9. Maggie Smith as Aunt May Parker

Hey, what's this? Another Harry Potter actor (actress in this case) in your fan-cast? Well, yeah, but that doesn't mean I'm Harry Potter biased. It's a great film franchise, and an amazing book series, even though I have watched or read just some of them, but I recall of Maggie Smith's performance in the film series. In my mind, she seems to have the appearance and wisdom of Aunt May, Peter's beloved aunt.

Source 1, Source 2
10. J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson

This one is no surprise to anybody, even for the ones who don't read comics. Academy Award winner, J.K. Simmons has been showered with praise for his performance as Peter's boss in the Daily Bugle. You can even hear him doing voice-overs for this character in the animated series The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble! With his appeal and charisma, no one could imagine a J. Jonah Jameson not played by J.K. Simmons, but thankfully, he has expressed a huge interest in returning to the role, similar to Alfred Molina.
Honorable Mention/s:

Source 1, Source 2
1. Jim Carrey as Cletus Kasady / Carnage

There were a lot of rumors swirling around that Jim Carrey would be playing in the Amazing Spider-Man 2 after he was spotted in the set. Sadly, we didn't saw him. However, since Marvel and Sony learned to work together, we might see Carnage fighting Spider-Man soon, but not until we see a perfect Venom (although I didn't include him here since I have no idea who fits as the best actor to play Venom). Although this may seem unlikely due to his disapproval of excessive violence, especially during the promotion of one of his films, there is still a chance he could play that character because come on, it's Marvel! If not, then I should thank that one person who suggested Jackie Earle Hayley to play this role because he might be the one. Of course this film may be overstuffed if he joins in, but maybe he'll be there as a cameo maybe, just like the Lizard?

Source 1, Source 2
2. Dylan Baker as Curt Conners / The Lizard

Dylan Baker played the role of Dr. Conners before Rhys Ifans took it on The Amazing Spider-Man. Although his role was really small, Sam Raimi wanted him to be the lead bad guy in the scrapped Spider-Man 4 (before moving onto the Vulture). It would have been amazing. Dylan Baker was disappointed after hearing the project being cancelled, and just maybe, Marvel could offer him the role again!

Just to clarify, this is not an official list, this is just a wish list of a few people I'd love to see in the film. We'll just have to wait until this Spider-Man Re-Reboot on July 28, 2017! Who else do you want to see in the film?

Director: Colin Trevorrow

Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D' Onofrio, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan and Judy Greer.

The park is open, again. Welcome to Dateline Movies yet again, and today for our seventh Spotted! post, we'll be trying to find some interesting things in the trailers of one of summer's biggest hits, because once again, I was not able to watch it myself. So if you haven't watched it, then you are not alone! So get ready to take a trip back to Isla Numbar, and pray that you make it out alive in Jurassic World!

What we saw in the trailers?

Years after a few failed attempts to reclaim the island (and to make sequels) and the death of Jurassic Park founder John Hammond, Simon Masrani, played by Khan (The Amazing Spider-Man), the head of Masrani Corporation has finally relaunched the park and turned it into Jurassic World, with larger dinosaurs, more advanced technology and one hybrid dinosaur known as the Indominus Rex.

Dinosaur trainer Owen Grady, played by Pratt (Who?), keeps the dinosaurs in check, alongside security chief Vic Hoskins, played by D' Onofrio (Netflix's Daredevil). Owen seems to have a connection with a few of the dinosaurs, which makes his life easier. Park manager and Owen's boss Claire Dearing, played by Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3) disagrees with Owen's claims of relating with the dinosaurs.

Claire's nephews Zach, played by Robinson (The Kings of Summer) and Grey Mitchell, played by Simpkins (Iron Man 3) come to visit their aunt, Claire, while their mother Karen, played by Greer (Jeff, Who Lives at Home), is probably off to work. Their little adventures in the park has been interrupted when the Indominus Rex escapes from containment, and it's up to these unlikely heroes to stop the creature from turning the visitors into Dino-Chow!

Spotted!: Hidden Surprises and Trivia (Spoiler Alert!)

Source
1. One Literal Easter Egg: For our first hidden surprise, we take a look at Jurassic World's Easter Promo! As you might have noticed, there are cyphers on the eggs that could be decoded if you know how. According to a source, most of these codes would lead straight to various promotional stills from the film itself, but the best part is that one which features a book entitled "God Creates Monsters", that was written by Dr. Ian Malcolm, who was played by Jeff Goldblum. Does this mean we could be seeing Jeff Goldblum reprise his fan-favorite character in this flick, or simply referenced?

Source
2. I Will Survive!: Aside from Dr. Ian Malcolm's possible presence, another member of the original cast has reprised his role, because he apparently survived the carnage of the previous Jurassic films, aside from the lead characters. B.D. Wong, who played Dr. Henry Wu, has already been seen in a few shots from the movie, and is said to be the one responsible for creating the dinosaurs! Could this mean he also created that Indominus Rex?

Source
3. History Repeats Itself: Among all the homages seen in the trailers, the most striking appearance is that of this amber. Yes, they're using it again, because people just never learn! The question is, what new creatures have the egg heads cooked-up in their laboratory? Possibly, a lot!
4. One Dino Army: For our last hidden surprise, we talk about the latest creature to roam Isla Numbar, the great, the abominable, the terrifying, Indominus Rex! What makes it one of the most interesting concepts in the film is that it is a hybrid of several dinosaur, and possibly other animals', DNA. If you could look at the chart above, you could notice that it is a possible hybrid of the following creatures...

Allosaurus, Crocodile, Caratosaurus, Spinosaur, Hadrosaur, Tyrannosaurus (obviously), Snake, Chameleon, Sauropod, Anklyosaurus and, Human DNA? This could mean a challenge for Owen and his pals, especially since he needs a small band of Raptors to detain the beast! Did you also know that "Indominus" means "untamable king"?

Well I guess that's a wrap for our seventh, yet rather short, Spotted! post. Are you excited for this film?  Still hoping to catch it on the big screen.

Movie Fact: Opposite Roles for Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe

Movie Fact:

Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington appeared in two films.  In the first movie titled Virtuosity an action science fiction movie, released in August 4, 1995 and directed by Brett Leonard, Denzel appears as Lt. Parker Barnes hunting down a merciless vitual reality entity named SID played by Russell Crowe.  Somewhat a good guy after a bad guy.
source
The two actor would appear together again in the 2007 biographical crime movie directed by Ridley Scott, titled American Gangster.  This time Russell Crowe is a detective named Richie Roberts trying to convict a gangster from North Carolina named Franck Lucas.  A good guy after a bad guy.

source

In Virtuosity, Denzel is the good, Russell is the bad.  In American Gangster its the opposite, Denzel is the bad, Russell is the good.  But in all honesty,  the two actors, whether their role is as a bad person or as a good person, they both performed their respective roles very, very well!  A round of applause to two distinguished actors.

In this sequel trilogy, the force is definitely strong! Welcome once more to Dateline Movies, and today we'll be tackling the most anticipated sequel of all time, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Yes, it's finally here. The long-awaited and highly demanded installments to the saga is coming soon. I know many of you may have been expecting another DC or Marvel Spotted! post, but come on guys, Star Wars is just as epic, and besides we love Star Wars! For those of you who have been reading our several Star Wars related posts, you'll get the idea. Also, I'm sorry for the long wait. Anyway, here it is boys and girls, our sixth Spotted! post.

What we saw in trailers?

Unfortunately for a film who already has more than one trailer, we still don't have an official synopsis, except from some hints from cast members and die-hard fans, as well as a few guesses of mine, which I would be using in this post.

Thirty years after the Battle of Endor in Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi, three unique individuals have to band together against a threat that is all too familiar yet somehow stronger than ever. A renegade heir named Kylo Ren, played by Driver (Girls) reassembles the remnants of the Sith army, and is on a quest for universal domination. Bringing with him in his quest for power are Captain Phasma, played by Christie (Game of Thrones), a powerful assassin and Supreme Leader Snoke, played by Serkis (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), his second-in-command.

The three unique people that I mentioned earlier are the only individuals that stand between one heck of a space ride and total obliteration. Finn, played by Boyega (Attack The Block), a hero-in-the-making disguised as a Stormtrooper, who got himself in serious trouble when the Sith finds out that he is an infiltrator. Rey, played by Ridley (Mr. Selfridge) is a lowly scavenger from the planet Jakku, who salvage left-out machine parts. Lastly, Poe Dameron, played by Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis) is one of the finest pilots around, who was sent on a mission by Princess Leia, played by Fisher (Family Guy), until he suddenly becomes best friends with Finn.

Together, they must seek Luke Skywalker, played by Hamill (Batman: The Animated Series) so that he may prevent Kylo Ren in enacting his devious plans, while going on an amazing adventure with classic characters, like Han Solo, played by Ford (The Raiders of the Lost Ark) as well as his trusted Wookee, Chewbacca.

Spotted!: Hidden Surprises and Trivia (Spoiler Alert!)

Source

1. Sins of The Father: If there's one thing I learned from the Star Wars series, both the original and prequel trilogy, it would be about the family, which is basically one of the most worn out cliches of all time, but still it is an important theme. Luke Skywalker found out that Darth Vader was his father. Anakin, before becoming Darth Vader, wanted to keep his wife safe from the Dark Side. Anakin's mother was killed by savage Jawwas. What I'm trying to say is, it is possible Kylo Ren could be the narrator that we heard at the first part of the second trailer.

If so, then that means Kylo Ren simply wants to be greater than Luke (as evidenced by Vader's helmet in the film, which suggests that he chose the Dark Side over being good). Another hint that Kylo Ren could be the narrator is that throughout each trailer, he seems to know how the Force works, and that cross-guard lightsaber looks as if it used to be Sith property that was upgraded by a Jedi.

Source
2. Falling Stars: With all the rapid yet clear stills of a TIE Fighter hangar, Stormtroopers assembling in what appears to be a palace and a few "blink-and-miss" shots of a mechanical area (specifically with that one shot with Captain Phasma, more on her later, and that one scene with Finn in a supposed digital labyrinth), it is possible that they may be rebuilding the Death Star, for the third time in this one franchise! If it won't be a Death Star, it would hopefully a weapon of mass-destruction, which I unfortunately couldn't support because honestly, could there be any other doomsday device in the Star Wars universe? If so, feel free to help us out in the comments!

Source
3. Behind The Mask: There are a lot, and I mean, a lot of new elements added to the already large universe in this latest installment. There are new heroes to love, new villains to despise but still love, and new planets to explore, but mostly love. However, the most interesting and by far, the most enigmatic character that has been, will be introduced in this movie, and it is Captain Phasma.

Aside from Kylo Ren, Phasma's presence in the film is clouded in mystery, especially since she wears a mask as well. There was a rumor regarding a female Stormtrooper suiting-up, and Phasma could be this supposed gender-bent copy. What's more mysterious is why a female? Aside from gender equality of course. Is it possible that she could be a defective clone, or an apprentice of Kylo Ren's, who may have been raised to become a powerful assassin? If she is an apprentice, where did she come from? I guess we'll just have to wait until Christmas arrives. If you're going to ask me though, I bet she is an assassin, trained by Kylo Ren, and she probably has a beef for the Jedi for probably killing her parents or simply being manipulated into thinking that the Jedi are the enemies.

Source
4. "We're Home!": One of the best, and undoubtedly, the most nostalgic part of the second trailer is the return of fan-favorite duo that is Han Solo and Chewbacca. Of course, apart from continuity with the previous installments, their reason in the film is also a topic for debate. The way Han says "We're home!" could mean that he may be separated from Leia and Luke years after Episode VI. In addition, this could be the mission Princess Leia assigned Poe Dameron, to find Han and Chewie and bring them home! The question is, how did they got lost in the first place? It is possible that Han and Chewie may be bounty hunting, until they encountered extremely dangerous foes and probably crashed the Millennium Falcon. Man, I can't wait for this flick!

Source

5. "Back, I am!": And speaking of nostalgia, Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker is one of the most anticipated returns in the film. Although we haven't seen him yet, he is rumored to be the Jedi Master that Finn, Poe and Rey is looking for (because who else could it be?). A thought says that he'll only be in two scenes, which is pretty sad and albeit disappointing if you ask me. Also, he seems to be crazier and isolated because something had happened some time prior to the film. But then again, it is possible he may be involved in a final fight scene with Kylo Ren. It could just be like Phantom Menace...'s duel between Darth Maul and Qui-Gon-Jinn. I got you there, didn't I? Thankfully, there is no sight of Jar Jar Binks in this film!

Source
6. Rogue One Down: For our final hidden surprise, even though it isn't really much of a surprise but more of a "movie fact", a Star Wars Anthology film series is in the works! Josh Trank, the director of the upcoming FANT4STIC film, was originally suppose to direct the first part of the series that has been titled Rogue One. Unfortunately for me because I enjoyed Chronicle, but mostly good for some of you because some of you may not like his take on his latest flick, he left the project to take on less known projects.

What's really interesting is that a lot of rumors (or leaked facts) point out that the project is still very much alive, with a handful of interesting ideas. Gareth Edwards could direct, with Jon Favreau and / or Matthew Vaughn directing a potential installment in the anthology. It might follow Felicity Jones is an all-out Rebel heist on the Death Star. The story would take place after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and before Episode IV: A New Hope. A lot of old classic like Boba Fett could return. New actors are also joining in with Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul. Sam Clafin, Ben Mendelsohn and Riz Ahmed may also be attached for any film in the anthology. Sadly, John Williams will not return to compose any scores for the series (although he did came back for Episode VII) and may be replaced by Academy Award winning composer, Andre Desplat.

The force really is strong in J.J. Abrams's upcoming film, or series. I enjoyed J.J. Abrams's take on the Star Trek reboot movies, so there is no doubt he could breath new life into this already incredible franchise. Just lessen the lens flares, please! How about you, do you think The Force Awakens could kick start a new trilogy?
