He was a young up-and-coming actor, a part-time punk rocker with his former band, and you might remember him for being the new version of Pavel Chekov in the Star Trek reboot series, he is none other than Anton Yelchin.
Born to parents with a knack for figure skating, Yelchin was born on March 11, 1989 in Leningrad, at a time when the Soviet Union was active. His parents are often berated for their Jewish background by the KGB. After the KGB prevented his parents from partaking in the 1972 Olympics, he and his family managed to make their way to America and start a new life. Yelchin then pursued acting, initially wanting to be a figure skater like his parents.
After appearing in a few minor roles, including films such as Delivering Milo and Tenacious D, Yelchin officially made his first major role debut in the drama series Huff as Byrd Huffstodt, with co-stars Hank Azaria and Oliver Platt.
Afterwards, he gained his major break in the acclaimed adaptation of Stephen King's Hearts in Atlantis, wherein he played as an eleven-year old boy named Bobby Garfield, alongside veteran actor Anthony Hopkins as Ted Brautigan. For his role in Hearts of Atlantis, Yelchin won Best Performance in a Feature Film - Leading Young Actor in 2002's Young Artists Awards ceremony.
After guess-appearing in Criminal Minds, Yelchin received further recognition for his performance as Zack Mazursky, who was based on a real-life murder victim named Nicholas Markowitz in the film Alpha Dog. He co-starred here with Bruce Willis, Ben Foster, Justin Timberlake, Olivia Wilde, Emile Hirsch and Sharon Stone.
With Chris Evans, Kristen Stewart, Donald Sutherland and Diane Lane, he played as Finn Earl, a middle-class boy who learns about the ins and outs of the rich community when his drug-addicted mother attempts to rekindle their relationship. This indie movie is titled Fierce People, and it was not a commercial and critical success due to its story being hated by critics.
He later appeared as the titular character of the coming-of-age flick, Charlie Bartlett, appearing alongside Robert Downey Jr., Kat Dennings and Hope Davis (who he also co-starred with in Hearts in Atlantis) as a rich teenager attempting to reach the top part of the school hierarchy by providing therapy to his classmates.
After appearing in two more movies, Middle of Nowhere, with Susan Sarandon and Arrow's Willa Holland, and the indie English-French film You and I, he managed to earn his most iconic role in the form of Pavel Chekov in J.J. Abrmas reboot of the Star Trek series, with co-stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana. He would reprise this role later in the sequels Star Trek Into Darkness and the upcoming Star Trek Beyond.
Aside from appearing in the hated Terminator: Salvation and the equally panned The Smurfs movies, Yelchin would then land a main role in the remake of the cult classic Fright Night, with co-stars Colin Farrell, Imogen Poots, Toni Collette and David Tennant among many others. The film garnered critical acclaim, with Yelchin getting praise for his chemistry with Farrell's and Tennant's characters. He later performed in other acclaimed movies such as Odd Thomas, wherein he is a teenager who sees dead people (No, it's not The Sixth Sense), and The Green Room, appearing alongside Patrick Stewart and again Imogen Poots.
After wrapping-up shooting in his other yet-to-be released movies, Anton Yelchin sadly and unexpectedly passed-away on June 19, 2016. He was crushed between the weight of his car, which was left unchecked while parked on an inclined roadway, and a brick wall. After officially announcing him as deceased, his co-stars, as well as his family and friends, even fans and critics, mourned his passing. He was originally set to star in Guillermo Del Toro's new project Trollhunters. His last movies, Star Trek Beyond, We Don't Belong Here, Rememory and Thoroughbred will be released posthumously. According to one of his friends, Keith Kjarval, Yelchin was ready to commence production of his directorial debut, "Travis", which would have been about an actor slash photographer who became an unwilling witness to a murder. When I heard that Anton Yelchin passed-away, I actually nearly cried. He was a very decent actor for his age. He was also one of the former child actors that I have never ever heard of doing what most child stars do at his age. He had so much potential, and so much to live for. Nevertheless, it is still an honor to watch him do what he does best, be that charming and geeky character that most of the time steals the show. Even if it was just for a short period of time, it was worth it. Thank you, Anton Yelchin, for sharing with the world your full range of talents! May you find peace with the other legends, especially those who have passed-away as well this 2016!
Every once in a while, a movie would be proven to be too successful to just leave those ideas in the big screen, while in some cases a movie could be deemed too lackluster that a small screen production could save it from obscurity. While most of the other shows out there that have been tied to their movie source material have been unsuccessful, there have actually been some pretty neat ones, and have received critical acclaim from critics and viewers alike. Before you tune-in to the new shows based on Lethal Weapon, Westworld and Mallrats (Man, those are a lot of movies taking a trip to prime time), revisit the best TV shows based on movies. Some of them you might have seen, some of them you haven't.
For this list, the show must qualify as basically a continuation or a prequel to the movies that they are based-on. Sometimes, they are made to fill-in some gaps. At the very least, it must have some form of connection with its big screen predecessors. Unfortunately, Marvel Shows such as the Netflix exclusives are excluded from this list, as they would very much takeover the entire list. So, what are we waiting for? Let's hop into Dateline Movies' countdown of the best shows based on movies!
Although Godzilla was very much alive before this film came out, the show was considered a follow-up to Emmerich's Godzilla. The 90s was an interesting decade. Aside from the rise of the Internet, we got a lot of very awesome and nostalgic animated shows, which are now considered classics nowadays. But did you know that in the 90s, we also had a fist full of animated shows based on movies? We had RoboCop, Jumanji, Men in Black (which we considered adding in this list, but did not make the cut), and The Mask. Although the latter two are based on comics, it was there respective films that helped them reached mainstream popularity. Among all of the adaptations however, Godzilla: The Series made it to this list as not only did it redeemed Godzilla's legacy, but was also much, much better than the theatrical version.
Godzilla: The Series chronicles the events that have transpired after Godzilla caused a ruckus in Manhattan, which occurred in the 1998 movie. From the same studios who gave us Men in Black and Extreme Ghostbusters, we join Dr. Nick Tatopoulus, the protagonist for Godzilla of 1998, as he leads a research team known as HEAT, which stands for Humanitarian Environmental/Ecological Analysis Team. The team only has one objective, and that is to hunt down new monsters, that have been on the rise ever since.
While I slightly enjoy some parts of Emmerich's Godzilla, and while I really haven't watched this show yet, I would most definitely recommend this over the film which everyone loves to hate. The synopsis itself already piqued my interest, as this reminds of a little bit of Pacific Rim. The idea of introducing more monsters was a very great one. Besides, this show was much more reliable to the Godzilla franchise, more than the film it was based on.
9. Spider-Man: The New Animated Series / MTV Spider-Man (2003)
- Based on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Films (2002-2007)
This short-lived and hugely underrated series, which was the best show MTV has made before focusing more on "music", has a special place in my inner child's heart. This show was exceptionally darker compared to the other Spider-Man show which aired at the same year, which was The Spectacular Spider-Man. The darkness of it all was very appealing, as it felt balanced. It was dark but at the same time very fun to watch. The animation is awesome, but not perfect. Hey, it was the early 2000s.
Originally pitched as an adaptation of the Ultimate Spider-Man series, the show shifted its focus to Sam Raimi's series because of its popularity. With the title character voiced by How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris, we focus on Spider-Man's life in and out of the costume as he makes his way through typical college life. Along the way, he gets to fight characters from the comics such as The Lizard and The Kingpin, and also new enemies such as The Talon and Turbo Jet.
I was heartbroken when I found-out not too long ago that the show was axed, especially since the show ended with a cliffhanger, and I really don't like unresolved cliffhangers. I decided to relive its former glory by binge-watching the episodes in YouTube about a year ago, and the quality doesn't seem to lose. The team's plans for Season 2 were also sadly passed-on, which would have had Peter trying to regain the city's trust in him. But then again, it might have been for the better as they just killed about two of the web-head's notable villains in the series. Furthermore, it would have contradicted Raimi's continuity, and we wouldn't want that. I'd still recommend it for those who have a burning hatred for Spider-Man 3.
8. The Real Ghostbusters (1986-1992) and Extreme Ghostbusters (1997)
- Based on The Original Ghostbusters Films (1984-1989)
I'm not much of a fan of Ghostubusters. I did enjoy watching the first movie of the series, and I would most certainly choose the previous two films over the reboot. I'm not being political or anything, but the first trailer didn't leave that much impression on my face. The jokes are pretty corny, by the way, but the music of the trailer was actually very good. These two distinctly toned follow-ups, one being campy and geared for children, and one being dark and geared for teens, did a great job at honoring the Ghostbusters' legacy.
The Real Ghostbusters focused on the familiar roster of ghost-hunting gentlemen in their typical missions, and of course, shenanigans. This show didn't have that much story to go around, thus being granted the eighth place in this list. However, Extreme Ghostbusters takes the same spot for delivering a unique entry to the franchise. Here, the Ghostbusters are long retired after the lack of ghost activity put them out of business. Egon Spengler decided to recruit his trusty students to restart their team after new ghosts begin appearing.
The reason why there are two shows for this spot is because, well, they are both based on one film series. In addition, each were able to offer something great. I only watched The Real Ghostbusters with my younger cousin, who is a fan, and I sometimes laugh because it reminds more of the Scooby-Doo cartoons I regularly watch. Despite being unbearably campy, the show did maintain the same funny side, albeit toned down, of the films. Extreme Ghostbusters was basically the Batman Beyond of the films, and while I also haven't watched this one yet, there is no question that this could have been a great basis for a now scrapped Ghostbusters 3. Speaking of which, did anybody read the leak script pages for the proposed sequel, and how it focused on a new generation of Ghostbusters? I personally think that that would have been a great story. Also, I might as well find the complete script to make a new entry for our cancelled movie posts.
7. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009) - Based on The Terminator Franchise (1984-Present)
I believe we can all agree that the recent Terminator films are subpar at best compared to the two James Cameron-made installments. Sure, we get to see Arnold Schwarzenegger kick Terminator butt again and again, with a couple of one-liners of curse, but none can capture the sci-fi dread that the original films made. Nowadays, the Terminator films are sacrificing coherent storytelling for non-stop CGI bonanza. However, before the Terminator series is reviled by fans for what it is today, one short-lived television program managed to leave a lasting impression for followers of the franchise, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
This series retells basically the formula of all Terminator films, as Sarah Connor, who was played by pre-Game of Thrones Lena Headey, with her son John Connor, make their way to endless hordes of Terminators sent by the malevolent Skynet. They are assisted by a new Terminator reprogrammed by the future John Connor named Cameron, which is a nice nod to the first two films' director.
I haven't watched this show, just like about half of the other series in this list (I used IMDb as a guide for this list), but I have heard a lot of great things about this show. It was totally expected that Lena Headey would make a great Sarah Connor, which is weird considering that Emilia Clarke recently played Sarah Connor in the hated Terminator: Genisys. But it wasn't only Headey who stood-out, Summer Glau, the lead Terminator of the series, and Thomas Dekker's John Connor were all great in their roles. The only negative aspect that I heard was that the show would tend to get predictable, especially since the core formula is about running away from crazed Terminators. On the bright side, people say that this really was better than Terminator: Salvation and Genisys.
6. Tron: Uprising (2012-2013) - Based on the Tron Series (1982-2010)
Disney's Tron was one of the classics that pushed the boundaries for technical brilliance in filming industry. While the story boggled a lot of minds, as said by many other critics, Tron was a major influence nonetheless. When Tron: Legacy came-out, with the project headed by Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski and the film's score made by none other than electronic duo Daft Punk, fans were confused as this one was much more complicated and less interesting than the original one. I watched the second one, and the story was nowhere near as crystal clear. But Disney knew better than just to discard a vast world of possibilities for Tron, and as such, another short-lived series was made in the form of Tron: Uprising.
In the animated Tron: Uprising, a computer programmer named Beck, voiced by post-Lord of The Rings fame Elijah Wood, is dragged into the world of the Grid, a cybernetic reality, where he is trained by the Grid's original protector, Tron. Now that the original Tron is hiding in the shadows, Beck must unlock his full potential and save the Grid from the clutches of its maniacal rulers.
Like Terminator: The Sarah Chronicles, I haven't watched this yet (I'm too occupied to watch these shows), but I've heard a lot of positive responses for this show. While I don't necessarily find the animation unique, judging by the images I've seen in the Internet, various Internet reviewers say that this show deserves a fighting chance. The good aspects of the show include the storyline, the voice-acting, and the overall experience. If the overarching story of the show is considered great, then you know that this is a good one. My oh my, will you look at the huge word count! This post is super lengthy, and it would be very bad for a reader to just keep reading a long post. In the meantime, we'll have to continue this countdown some other time. Before you leave, take a look at some at the new trailers for Westworld and Lethal Weapon, which I mentioned that they are getting the TV do-over. Seriously, this doesn't seem necessary, except for Westworld, because HBO knows how to make a television program. As an added bonus, take a look at this adaptation of, Rush Hour? Really? What's next? The Exorcist, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Training Day, Frequency? Nevermind, these are now confirmed too. By the end of this countdown, we might as well make the Worst TV Shows Based On Movies, especially now that these kinds of shows are currently trending. Also, this week, we lost Antony Yelchin. He was one of the best up-and-coming actors I have known, and his talents were put too good use in the Star Trek reboot films. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
Okay, I originally wanted to make this a Spotted! 5.5, but I tried to find some scenes to breakdown, but there hasn't been anything worth discussing, aside from speculating who the main villain is. Besides, it begs the most important question. Who would have the power? As such, we will be guessing who the big bad super villain is in this movie filled with villains. While it seems that it might be impossible to theorize the identity of our mystery figure, but luckily, Dateline Movies and you the reader has a little bit of comicbook knowledge to help us out. #SuicideSquadGoals indeed! Below are eight of our candidates for Suicide Squad's potential target, arranged from the least likely to the most possible.
1st Candidate: The Joker
The most obvious candidate on this speculative post is none other than the Clown Prince of Crime himself, the Joker. Known for being the Dark Knight Batman's arch-nemesis, the Joker is unpredictable, an unstoppable force of insanity, and has left a large pile of dead bodies at the wake of his madness. The Joker's deadly nature forces him to do almost anything just to spread chaos for the fun of it, just as long as he gets to torment the Batman. However, even if he is crazy enough to do all sorts of crimes, I doubt that the Joker even needs an army of super powerful monsters simply to get to Batman. If the Joker was a crazed would-be world conqueror, then he would probably need some muscle, but he isn't, and that's what makes the Joker so special. It's because of his broken psyche that makes the Joker the unlikeliest of suspects. It is possible that the only reason the Joker is involved is because Harley Quinn is in the story, and given the two characters' relationship, the Joker just wants Harley back. To further support this claim, you would notice that the Joker retrieved Harley from a vat of chemicals, which might suggest that the Joker has feelings for Harley, even if their connection is kind-of twisted.
2nd Candidate: Lex Luthor
The second unlikeliest choice is Lex Luthor. In a deleted scene which was added in the R-Rated "Ultimate Cut" of Dawn of Justice, we get to see the same scene with Batman threatening Luthor if he ever tries anything evil. While in the theatrical version we just saw Luthor warning of something deadly arriving to Earth, this version of the said scene had Batman making the preparations to transfer Luthor to Arkham Asylum, much to Luthor's dissatisfaction. While there hasn't been any official confirmation for the character's involvement in the story, there have been some reports of Luthor being spotted on the set of the movie. Although all members of the team are incarcerated in a prison known as Belle Reve, it can be said that Amanda Waller might be recruiting Harley Quinn at the very beginning in Arkham. The reason why this is unlikely is because, other than being already the villain in a previous movie, he seems to have no purpose in the movie other than a cameo. Besides, all he wanted was Superman dead, so why does he need an army when his nemesis is deceased?
3rd Candidate: Darkseid (or Anyone From Apokolips)
Yes, yes, "Dark Side" and "Apocalypse" are spelled like these, and having Darkseid as the main villain for the Suicide Squad. For one thing, Darkseid is too all-powerful for the worst heroes ever. Darkseid is also a noted mastermind, so going headfirst into a world full of superheroes without planning is definitely not Darkseid-like. But what could stop Darkseid from sending someone on his behalf to steal some Mother Boxes dormant on Earth. Also, do you notice a certain color these monsters are possessing? Yeah green could mean anything, but green is also the color of Darkseid's most trustworthy underlings, the Parademons. One fan has a theory claiming that the subway creature is one of Darkseid's henchmen, Mantis, because aside from his trademark green suit, the monster is taller compared to other candidates, according to the fan. Besides, recent interviews say Batman v. Superman has some connection with Suicide Squad. While this may sound possible, it cannot be said that the monsters are actually Parademons, as Parademons have wings, and these appear a little bit more human. And even if Darkseid would want to experiment on humans, he wouldn't, if my memory serves me right.
The second suspect for this mystery is, although is still set to make a proper debut, the megalomaniac cyborg alien threat Brainiac. According to some eagle-eyed viewers notice that the projectiles and extending tentacle-like objects sprouting out from the subway creature is cybernetic in nature, and far from being of earthly origin. The most obvious hint that Brainiac is the main antagonist of Suicide Squad is the appearance of what looks like a downed ship. Since Brainiac is an alien, this is most likely possible. In addition, Brainiac has a thing for transforming people into cybernetic hybrids, and the mutates' appearances bearing human-ish looks further supports this. Just take a look at what he did to Lex Luthor in the animated show Justice League Unlimited. His appearance here would also make sense here because, as hinted in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and from some interviews, objects known as the Mother Boxes are being sought by Darkseid. These boxes are objects of power, similar to Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Stones, and is the secondary objective in Darkseid's wishlist. The first being the fabled "Anti-Life Equation". Since Brainiac is a villain obsessed with learning about everything, Brainiac might be the best guess, but he isn't. For business reasons, it is not very wise to use a very famous and omnipotent villain in a movie about less-renowned characters. Also, I doubt that he would want to transform everyone into cyborgs, as he seems to rely more on purely robotic units.
Now it's time for the likeliest of suspects, but also to the least expected ones. Given that these monsters are obviously human at first, it is possible that they may not be experimented on or mutated. They might actually be brainwashed. But who do we know that can morph the faces of our heroes and control their mind? Why it's none other than the Justice League's first enemy, Starro The Conqueror. True to his name, Starro is a starfish-shaped alien who can control anyone by attaching smaller versions of itself. The bizarre features on the creatures' faces signify that this may be true. Then again, these beings may not even be human to begin with, because it makes me wonder what are the black oozes that are scattered everywhere. These may be some liquids originating from Starro, but it might also be ink?
Yes, ink. There is a comicbook villain, an enemy of the many Earth-based Green Lanterns to be exact, that has the power to manipulate the tattoos on his skin to create an assortment of things. And that is the menacing Tattooed Man. It's not the best name yet, but his powers are undeniably powerful. Recently, it has been confirmed that actor and rapper Common's mystery role is under the name of "Monster T". Sure, the name doesn't ring any bells, but his costume, complete with tattoos, and the fact that the website of IMDB leads to the Tattooed Man's webpage makes it pretty likely that the Tattooed Man is the big bad of the movie. Also, Monster T's initials are also a hint at the name Tattooed Man. Although the Tattooed Man is not known for being a truly sinister mastermind, it is possible that he recently gained new powers, and he found it completely uncontrollable. I'm starting to think that Common may be the bad guy we have been looking for the entire post. But wait, what're those plants doing?
7th Candidate: Floronic Man
Raise your hand if you knew the name Floronic Man before reading about it in this post. If not, let me give you a brief overview of him. Jason Woodrue is a scientist who was the cause of Poison Ivy's powers. He also is a noted plant fanatic, but not as notorious as the femme fatale Poison Ivy. Apart from being intellectually gifted, the Floronic Man also has a knack for dabbling with the supernatural forces of the environmental plane. He has since been an enemy of the Justice League, the Atom and a certain swamp monster known as Swamp Thing. Personally, I believe that this is the likeliest of options, given that the subway monster seems to be using plant-like tendrils, and the number of greenery scattered all throughout the setting of the movie makes this most probably true. And if anyone is asking, I think it is possible for him to mind-control humans with his plantations. However, these threats may be far more paranormal than anyone originally anticipated, and even I am shocked by these possible revelations.
8th Candidate: Enchantress (?)
Wait, what? A teammate is probably going to be a traitor? Well not necessarily unexpected, but it is surprising nonetheless. Heads-up though, as this part contains potential major spoilers from the movie, since it is believed that this data originated from someone who watched the movie in advance. Read at your own risk! Anyway, this comment published by user "pra 511" in the video "Suicide Squad Official Trailer #3 (2016) Margot Robbie HD" of the channel JoBlo Movie Trailers, tickled my interest. According to the user, the movie would be focusing more on Cara Develigne's character known as Enchantress. After being possessed by a witch, June Moon is forced to use her newfound powers to bring back the Incubus, the witch's brother, back to life, and she uses Monster T. as a host to the entity. The Enchantress, however, needs to retrieve something from Amanda Waller, her heart, which is needed to revive the Incubus. To do so, she fills-up the city with monsters, and inevitably the Suicide Squad is deployed. There are also some details here about possible deaths, but I don't want to spoil them here. Let's just wait for the movie to come-out, then we'll talk.
Well, justice's bad side is something we really can't wait for any longer on the big screen. Anyway, before we officially close this post, help yourself to Twenty One Pilots' latest song, which is included in the official soundtrack for Suicide Squad, Heathens. I originally wanted to have Will Smith do a theme song for the movie, since he did the same thing for Men in Black and Wild Wild West. And it's been a longtime since Will Smith last rapped a song. So I guess we're done here, keep calm and listen to the voices in your head!
Well, aren't we late? The Independence Day in our nation might be over, but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate it. Besides, there are still plenty of Independence Days to come for other countries.
After directing the apocalyptic flick 2012, which caused a lot fuss among my classmates when we were at sixth grade, and of course, every moviegoer's most hated version of Godzilla, the literal Disaster Artist Roland Emmerich is back to doing what he does best, and that is making movies about endless destruction. On June 22, 2016, get ready to head back to the most patriotic alien invasion movie in history with Independence Day: Resurgence. Twenty years after the first installment, they have been preparing for this day. Are you prepared?
It has been many years since the aliens have ravaged Earth. Luckily, as the previous movie showed us, nothing, not even an extraterrestrial threat can make humanity loose hope. The United Nations, with support from President Elizabeth Lanford, played by Ward (Gone Girl), are able to salvage the extraterrestrial technology to create weapons of intergalactic defense that will hopefully repel the invaders if ever they decide to come back. But someone has to handle these handy-dandy arsenals with extreme care, and the Earth Space Defense are formed just to do that. Its headquarters is the famous source of alien-based conspiracy Area 51, where a revived Dr. Brakish Okun, played by Spiner (Star Trek: The New Generation) works.
Two decades after the attack, some scientists have stumbled upon a dormant spaceship which belonged to the invaders. What seemed to be nothing more than a relic of a failed attempt at global extinction turned-out to be a warning for humanity, as they soon discover that the aliens sent a distress signal to their other comrades in the far reaches of the unknown universe, and they received the message. Now that the aliens are gearing-up once more, humanity's last hope lies on these few unlikely heroes.
Pilot Jake Morrison, played by Hemsworth (The Hunger Games Trilogy) lost his family in the first invasion. He is the lover of Patricia Whitmore, played by Monroe (It Follows), who is also the daughter of former president Thomas Whitmore, played by Pullman (Scary Movie 4). Now, he soars through the skies in fighter jets installed with reversed-engineered laser blasters.
Speaking of former president Whitmore, he himself is not doing so well. Suffering from a mental disorder known as "Alien Residual Condition", brought upon by the disturbing events that unfolded years before, especially since one of the aliens psychically attacked him, Franklin becomes paranoid. He claims to have been seeing visions of the aliens' inevitable return, even adding that he knows everything that the creatures know.
Former satellite repairman, environmental activist, chess wizard and the son of Julius Levinson, played by Hirsch (Taxi), David Levinson, played by Goldblum (The Fly) gets a promotion from his job because of his discovery of the aliens' weak spots the last time, which is referred to us the "War of 1996". He is now the acting head of Earth Space Defense, or ESD for short.
Dylan Dubrow-Hiller, played by Usher (Where The Game Stands Tall) is the son of hero fighter pilot Steven Hiller, played by Will Smith (Suicide Squad), who died in an accident involving Hiller testing a prototype salvaged ship, (and former exotic dancer turned hospital manager Jasmine Dubrow-Hiller, played by Fox (Kill Bill). Dylan is now a pilot like his father, and works alongside Jack Morrison. Wait, Will Smith's character is dead? He must be busy taking care of the alien threat with the Men in Black.
Together, these heroes will band together to save the world from these landmark-obsessed alien invaders with the creatures' own technology, but they must also contend with the master of the aliens themselves, as well as their deadliest weapon of all, a gravity-manipulating machine! Is it me or does that sound a little bit like the climatic battle in Man of Steel?
Well, this is where we end our third consecutive press release. Up next, we would talk about the "Worst Heroes Ever" in a Spotted! .5 post, as well as an expose on a scrapped production about a certain popular character named Master Chief. Stay tuned for those! Also, we would just like to say that our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the Orlando shooting, as well as the family and friends of Christina Grimmie. Okay, this is where we really end our post.
And we're back again to one of our awesome press releases. When we last left, we had a glimpse of local indie filmmaking at its finest that made such a good impression at the Cannes Film Festival - Ma'Rosa. This time, let us see Filipino indie film production with international connections in this movie, a biopic film detailing the true story behind the man who is known today as The Saint of Second Chances. Join Dateline Movies today as we go on a spiritual journey with newcomer Paolo Dy's directorial debut, Ignacio De Loyola!
Ignacio De Loyola (2016) Rated NR: This film currently has no rating. Genre/s: Biographic, Drama, History, Religion This film is to be released on July 27, 2016 (PH Release Date; Limited Release Only) Presented by Jesuit Communications Foundation Philippines and Solar Pictures
Musician: Ryan Cayabyab
Director of Photography: Lee Briones Writer and Director: Paolo Dy Starring:
Andreas Muñoz as Iñigo De Loyola
Javier Godino as Xanti
Julio Perillán as Father Sanchez
Pepe Ocio as Montes
What is the movie about?
Soldier, sinner, saint, take a look at the life of Iñigo De Loyola, played by Muñoz (The Devil's Backbone), and see how one man's failure led to his greatest achievement. Well this is obviously one of our shorter promotions. Up next, we'll have something that you are all too familiar with. Independence Day just passed, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't celebrate. Plus, lots and lots of aliens! Peace out, Dateliners!
I'm not a huge fan of mainstream Filipino cinema. There, I said it. Usually, I would watch them on cable with my family, and at most times we find entertainment mostly at the movies' many flaws. No offense to those who love them, this is just my opinion. But there is one part of the Filipino filming industry that I truly admire, and that is the corner of indie movies. I'll admit I haven't watch much of them yet, but from what I hear through several commercials, it sounds like it really is worth the watch. This coming July 6, 2016, two flicks from the indie Filipino side will be shown to the public, and Dateline Movies is here today to promote those films. The first of the two is the new feature by ace director Brilliante Ma. Mendoza, Ma'Rosa!

What is the movie about?
Journey into the private crime-ridden world of Rosa, played by Jose (Mano Po 5: Gua Ai Di), with her equally desperate-for-money husband Nestor, played by Diaz (Taklub). In the eyes of their neighbors, they are just a simple family running a home-based convenience store, or a "sari-sari store". In reality, it is more than just a place to get your ideal items, it is also a front for a local meth-dealing operation, with the couple using income from both the drugs and their legal merchandise to earn a living.
One day, one of their neighbors ratted them out to the police, and soon they are arrested. The raid team lead by Sargent Castor, played by Fernandez (Boy Golden: Shoot-To-Kill) demands that the couple give-up the name of their meth supplier in order for them to get their freedom, but the police want more than just information. They want money, fifty thousand pesos in cash to be exact.
To be free of their current predicament, Rosa asks for the aid of her children, Jackson, played by Roco (Death March), Raquel, played by Eigenmann (Tragic Theater) and Kerwin, played by Angeles. But it's no easy task. To get the required amount of money, the three children will have to fight with their wits and put everything on the line for their parents' freedom. Raquel endlessly asks for friends to lend her some cash, Kerwin becomes a male prostitute for a gay benefactor, and Jackson sells all the household appliances to make ends meet. But will it be enough?
Fun fact, did you know that Jaclyn Jose received an award for best actress during the recently concluded 69th Cannes Film Festival? She is also the first ever Filipina to win such award, beating actresses Charlize Theron and Marion Cotillard. It really is such an honor for the Philippines. No less than Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen and Iranian producer Katayoon Shahabi handed her the prestigious award and with George Miller as the President of the Jury . Besides, the newly elected president of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte was so proud of her, that he promised that he will fulfill Jose's suggestion of ridding crime. Don't forget to catch the award-winning Ma'Rosa in cinemas near you on July 6, 2016!
